When adversity arises, do you know how to keep balance? As you may not know, it truly is not an easy task. Life is complex and has so many facets that contribute to the systematic structure of our lives. Every day we meet with challenges that can be positive or negative.
How Does Adversity Effect Our Lives?
Although we all face challenges from time to time that are beyond our control, it is your choice how you respond to each circumstance and how you try to keep balance in your life. Your actions are what matter when you are faced with adversity.
Every day you wake up and set out on your own path from the way you start your day to the way you finish your day. It is your personal approach that you structured in your own design in life.

What are the 6 Types of Adversity?
There are 6 types of adversity that affect our lives at no given moment. They are challenges that we need to overcome by preparing coping strategies to minimize the effects on our daily lives.
- Unexpected Adversity
- Emotional Adversity
- Physical Adversity
- Mental Adversity
- Social Adversity
- Financial Adversity
Unexpected Adversity
Unexpected Adversity always comes at the worst possible time and throws us into a series of emotions and responses that can often be uncontrollable. For instance, when hurricane “Katrina” or “Harvey” hit the United States of America leaving devastation to all who lived in its path. The overall damages were $125 billion for each hurricane. My heart still goes out to the folks who were affected, some of those people are still displaced and suffering emotionally and physically.
Most of us have been fortunate enough to not have to live through a hurricane or the aftermath.

Emotional Adversity
Emotional adversity is another type, like when you have lost someone close to you. It is difficult to grieve for the person who died due to illness, injury, or aging. When you grieve someone, you go through five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It is important to understand that no two people experience grief in the same way. You must take the time you need to process the grief without expectations of how long it will take. The last step, accepting, is often the most difficult, but you eventually come to realize that all the memories of the times you shared make you think that the person will always be there with you.
Physical Adversity

The beautiful lady in the tree is my mother. She was the happiest, kind, understanding, and loving person you could meet. Always so full of life no matter what challenges came about. Oftentimes, you would find her helping someone or working in her amazing gardens. Then one day she had a stroke, her one side no longer had motion. In all her physical adversity, she wanted to put her makeup on every morning and be presentable to the world. About two years later, she lost her battle in this world.
I was never so devastated as I was then. It took me a exceptionally long time before I reached the point of acceptance, but I never stopped missing her. Every day I see her somewhere in my life like when the birds sing, a butterfly flies by or when I am dusting some of her knickknacks, she is always with me.
Mental Adversity
Mental Adversity has touched our lives in some way or another either in our personal lives or someone we cared about. It may have been from a breakup, death in the family, loss of job, becoming homeless, addiction to alcohol or drugs, PTSD, or even inherited mental disorders.
I genuinely believe it is important to seek professional counseling if you feel trouble by Mental Adversity. With a caring heart, I have provided the information for those who are in crisis or if you know someone who is in crisis. Click here for a list of Hotlines in the U.S.A.
Social Adversity
Social Adversity is the inability to communicate or interact with your friends and peers in your life. It can start as early as childhood; an example is how a child interacts with other children in pre-school. Today many children even in elementary and high school face this challenge especially when a child is getting bullied or there is that child who is a prankster to others. As adults, we also can find ourselves in an awkward position when out socially with friends and peers.
You must find a strategy that best fits your circumstances and move forward with your plan of action. You can read and teach your children about adversity with some interesting books.

Financial Adversity
Financial Adversity is the struggle of financially not being able to pay your monetary obligations. There are life situations that can cause the challenges of financial adversity such as loss of job, illness, family member losing their life and a relationship breakup. Those are just a few of the reasons why assessment and action planning are essential. It will take time to see results, stay motivated, persevere forward, but do not give up!
Have You Kept Balance in Your Life?
The key to keeping your life balanced when facing adversities is to take time to reflect on the situation, keep a positive mindset, decide how to proceed with a plan of action, follow through on the plan, and if you need assistance, ask a friend, partner or professional for help.
